Thomas Locker is one of my favorite authors/illustrators in the science genre. His books are poetic and the illustrations are beautifully painted! Here are some of my favorites:
Water Dance is wonderful book if you are studying the water cycle. Here is an illustration and excerpt. In this book each page has a painting having to do with water and then a poem/riddle for each:
These books are excellent models for a study of verbs. You can also use them in a poetry unit. Students could write their own nonfiction poems about nature or another concept you are studying in science.
Cloud Dance is similar:
Cloud Dance is similar:
Sky Tree follows a tree through the seasons:
I love the simplicity of the words and the beauty of the paintings. The author does provide facts at the end of the books about clouds, water, etc. Use these during science or just for enjoyment!
Wow-the illustrations are so beautiful in those books! I can imagine that I would use these books regularly in my class for a variety of literacy topics too!
